“a big thank you to the space2grieve team for providing a safe space to explore and make peace with the multitude of complex and confusing feelings that can follow a bereavement. i will always be grateful for the kindness, support and empathy i was shown during a sad and difficult time”
support for children and young people
space2grieve can support children and young people aged 3-18.
We have a team of volunteer bereavement support specialists who are specifically trained to support children and young people. All our volunteers hold an enhanced DBS check.
These one to one sessions usually take place at our friendly welcoming space at ETNA in East Twickenham. However, it is also possible for children to be seen at school – if the school is within the Richmond borough – or remotely and occasionally, under special circumstances, at home.
Sessions are usually for short fixed-term periods. For example, a child might initially be offered:
- 1 session to see how they feel about having support.
- 3 more to see if they feel comfortable with the volunteer and ready to talk about their bereavement.
- 8 further sessions to focus on their bereavement.
A child may choose to talk about their bereavement from the very first session. Alternatively, after their initial sessions, they may decide not to proceed to the bereavement support section at this time. It is important that this is respected. They can return at a later date.

“i feel a lot better. lots of fun activities. i felt i could be open and tell things that i didn’t want to tell anyone else.”
parenting through grief
space2grieve’s Children and Young People’s Bereavement Support Service includes a free bespoke provision for parents of bereaved children, called ‘Parenting through Grief’.
After an initial telephone call to register for the service, parents are offered a 90-minute session at the ETNA Centre with an experienced specialist bereavement supporter. This is an opportunity to talk about how their child/young person is grieving and to be given information and advice.
Parents can also access our reference library of books for bereaved children to see if any might be helpful to their circumstances.
After this session, space2grieve may go on to place the child or young person onto the waiting list for their own free support as outlined above.
“the support across my two PtG sessions is the sort of thing that i will look back on in years to come and not ever forget. the sessions were superb. they not only helped me to look at my own bereavement, they helped me with the daunting task of doing my absolute best now for my children. thank you.”
